Beach or studio, on Maui. The two most reluctant seniors I shot this year both came back and booked a second session.
The reluctant senior
Two shy kids, and both of them booked again.
Both families said the same thing in advance: he's shy, he doesn't like photos, do your best. Both sessions ran long because the kid was enjoying himself, and both boys booked a second session outdoors after the studio one.
The method is not complicated. I show them the back of the camera as I go. Once somebody sees a photograph of themselves that they actually like, the self-consciousness drops away and everything after that is easy. Getting a guarded seventeen-year-old to open up is the part of this job I enjoy most.
Studio or beach
Bring the jersey, the belt, the instrument, the board.
The studio work is lit hard against black with smoke — athletes with their belts and medals, letterman jackets, gear in hand. It is a different register from a beach session and it suits seniors who want their sport or their thing in the frame.
Or do both. Several seniors shoot the studio session first, get comfortable, then book the outdoor session on a beach at sunrise. More on the studio
