MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO ON MAUI

Maui has something for everyone! From epic sunrises above the clouds to crystal-clear snorkeling and world-class beaches. Here are some of the best experiences to make the most of your time on the island. Local Tip: Earlier mornings are best for beaches, snorkeling, and exploring before wind and crowds pick up. Always check weather and ocean conditions, and respect the land.

Haleakalā National Park (Sunrise or Sunset)

Watching the sun rise or set above the clouds at over 10,000 feet is unforgettable. Sunrise requires a reservation in advance; sunset does not. Bring warm layers as I promise you it gets cold up at 10,000 feet. Another tip is arrive at least 2-3 hours before sunrise or sunset to get a good parking spot.

Road to Hāna (Full-Day Adventure)

Take a full day to enjoy the journey, waterfalls, and coastline. Don’t rush this drive.

Local favorites: Auntie Sandy’s Banana Bread (Ke‘anae), Braddah Hutts BBQ, and Hāmoa Beach—one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

⚠️ Avoid hiking after heavy rain due to flash-flood risk.

Snorkel at Honolua Bay

The best snorkeling spot on Maui and a protected marine reserve with abundant sea life. Be sure to check out the Maui Snorkel Report before going by clicking here. Try to snorkel early before 11am, skip murky water days, and always snorkel with a partner.

Black Rock at Kā‘anapali Beach

Cliff jump at Pu‘u Keka‘a (Black Rock), a sacred Hawaiian site believed to be where spirits leapt into the afterlife. Only jump when ocean conditions are calm and safe.

Wailea Beach

One of Maui’s most beautiful beaches with calm water, easy access, and incredible sunsets. Great for swimming, paddleboarding, or relaxing.

Kapalua Coastal Trail

A scenic, easy walk along the coastline with ocean views, lava rock formations, and frequent turtle sightings. Perfect at sunrise or towards sunset.

Whale Watching (Dec–Apr)

Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales. You can often spot them from shore or take a boat tour for a closer experience.

ʻĪao Valley State Monument

A lush valley with short walking paths and views of the famous ʻĪao Needle. A great, easy stop to experience Maui’s greenery and history.

Lūʻau or Sunset Dinner

Experience Hawaiian culture at a traditional lūʻau or enjoy a sunset dinner overlooking the ocean in Wailea or Lahaina. Reservations recommended.

TOP 5 ACTIVITIES TO BOOK ON MAUI (AND WHY)

If you want experiences that consistently become the highlight of a Maui vacation, these are the five activities I recommend booking in advance. They’re well-run, unforgettable, and worth every penny.

1. Day Trip to Lānaʻi with Trilogy Excursions

Take a day trip to another island with Trilogy Excursions. I may be a little biased—I worked for Trilogy for over 10 years—but I truly believe they offer some of the most memorable experiences in Hawaii. I’ve brought multiple friends on this exact trip, and every one of them said it was one of the highlights of their entire Maui vacation.

From the service and food to the snorkeling and sailing, Trilogy consistently delivers. They’ve also been voted Maui’s top sea activity. If the Lānaʻi tour is out of your budget, they offer other incredible (and more affordable) options as well.

2. Helicopter Tour of Maui

The best way to see Maui’s dramatic landscapes—waterfalls, sea cliffs, rainforests, and valleys you simply can’t access any other way. Expensive, but truly unforgettable.

3. Whale Watching Tour (Seasonal: December–April)

4. Snorkeling Tour (Molokini or West Maui)

A guided snorkeling tour removes all the guesswork. You’ll visit clearer waters, see more marine life, and snorkel with experienced crews who know ocean conditions and safety.
