Timing
Six to nine months. Later is usually better.
The more bump is showing, the more the photographs read as what they are. Seven, eight, even nine months if you are comfortable moving around on sand — that is the window where these images do what you want them to do.
People have booked at two months, purely to mark the moment they found out. That is a perfectly good reason and I will shoot it happily. Just know that at two months the photograph is about the news, not the bump.
Who else is in it
The best frame is rarely the solo portrait.
Bring your partner. Bring the older ones. A four-year-old with his hand on his mother's belly is the photograph that ends up framed, more often than the beautiful solo shot on the lava rock — though I will get you that one too.
Lei photograph beautifully against skin and light fabric, and several of my favorite maternity frames are built around them. If you want that look, mention it and I will tell you where to get good ones.

Most maternity sessions book The Maui Special — 45 minutes is enough for solo portraits, the two of you, and the older kids without anyone getting tired.
